Art Museum Area Boasts World Class Art

The Art Museum Area of Philadelphia is sited on the blocks that surround the city’s largest and most famous museum complex.  It lies north of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and lovely Logan Square.  While this district is by no means large, residents often further subdivide it into the smaller communities of Francisville, Spring Garden, Fairmount, and Brewerytown.

The district is held in high regard by residents and visitors who enjoy walking the streets past luxury homes many of which date back to the 19th century.  The real estate here also includes many shops and restaurants giving it a lively feel.

Behind the renowned Museum of Art lie Boathouse Row and the Fairmount Water Works.  This historic structure was recently converted into a restaurant.  The district is favored by students and young professionals because of its closeness to the downtown area of Philadelphia and several of the city’s colleges and universities.

The tree lined Benjamin Franklin Parkway connects the Philadelphia Museum of Art and City Hall.  Many of the area’s cultural attractions are located along this busy boulevard including: the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Rodin Museum, and the Franklin Institute.  Also along the thoroughfare are two garden spots: the Swann Memorial Fountain, and Logan Square.  The city’s annual Independence Day Parade travels along the Parkway.

Centennial Starts Museum

On the nation’s 100th birthday, Philadelphia hosted America’s first World’s Fair.  The 1976 Centennial Exhibition featured several structures that showcased the nation’s industry, art, achievements and history.  The building housing art, Memorial Hall, was designed to remain standing after the exhibition close.

The new museum had a mission to do more than merely display works of art.  It would also act as a school to train artisans in painting, drawing, and design work.  On May 10, 1877, the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art opened.  The museum solicited donations of art works and received many pieces of Japanese and European paintings and decorative items which it put on display.

In 1882, Clara Bloomfield Moore donated an enormous collection of paintings, books, textiles, enamels, carved ivory, books, and antique furniture. The museum continued to receive many donations along with cash donations which were used to round out collections with purchases.

Museum and Area Grow in Popularity

The Art Museum district continues to grow alongside the museum.  The region is attracting more and more people looking for luxury Art Museum Philadelphia homes for sale.  Meanwhile, the museum has experienced such heavy attendance and has such extensive collections that a new building designed by Frank Gehry has been commissioned.  The gallery space will be unique in that the halls will be underground beneath the steps of the existing Art Museum.  These stairs were made famous in the film “Rocky.”  Like him, the Art Museum Area is a champ that should never be counted out and will always keep coming back.
