The Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, held during the weekend of the second Saturday of May each year. With over 100 colleges and Universities from the U.S. and Canada involved, thousands of student athletes will gather to compete. If you live in Manayunk, Art Museum and University City, prepare yourself for a large influx of regatta spectators this weekend. South Philadelphia and Bella Vista home owners will also notice the increase in visitors as the hunt for the ultimate Philly cheese steak takes place.
The regatta is named for Harry Emerson “Dad” Vail, one of America’s early college coaches. He coached at the University of Wisconsin between 1911 and the late 1920’s. His crews competed against great odds since little rowing took place in Wisconsin. He persisted, however, drawing on a lovable personality and great respect for hard work. The regatta will be held this weekend, May 11 & 12. For more information, including a Spectator’s Guide, check out http://dadvail.org/Spectators. Good luck, Athletes!!
