It’s time to put those spinning classes to use! Whether you are coming to watch or ride, 2012 celebrates the 28th TD Bank Philadelphia International Championship, bringing bicycle racing to Philadelphia on June 3rd. This year’s trek will only encompass a 124 mile route versus the traditional 156, slightly shortening the race circuit. As always the course will begin with laps around Logan Circle, before heading towards your Manayunk home. If you bike and live in Manayunk, you know about “The Wall,” a steep hill that challenges even experienced riders, and adds extreme challenge to this race.
This year, however, the Bicycling Open, also called the Gran Fondo, co-sponsored by Bicycle Magazine, allows registered riders of any skill level to join in the fun with a condensed race occurring at 7 a.m., before the “official” race start. The actual race will start at 2 Park Towne Place. The TD Bank International Cycling Championship Men’s Race will commence at 10:45 a.m. and the Liberty Classic Women’s Race begins ten minutes later at 10:55 a.m.
Race registration is open through June 1st and packet pickup is on June 2nd between 12 and 6 p.m. at Benjamin Franklin Pkwy & N 21st Street, near the art museum. Each cyclist will be given a timing chip to affix to their helmet. The recognition ceremony will take place at 11:05 a.m. To find out more information or register for the event, please click here.
