South Philly: The Mike McCann Team’s Guide

South Philadelphia is made up of several different neighborhoods, each with their own unique style and charm. The area maintains a quiet, residential feel while still offering every convenience imaginable. The South Philadelphia area has deep roots and a strong sense of community, with many locally owned shops and businesses. The area is known for amazing food, a rich culture and, quite simply, being a wonderful place to live. Check out some of our favorite South Philly highlights!

9th Street Italian Market

The Italian Market is a one stop shop for all of your grocery needs. The streets are lined with shops and vendors offering low prices on a huge variety of fresh food. The area also contains high quality coffee shops, restaurants and specialty stores. Whether you are doing your weekly shopping or just looking for the thrill of this one-of-a-kind shopping experience, the Italian Market is definitely the place to be.

South Street

Philly’s famous South Street, marking the beginning of South Philly, offers blocks and blocks of restaurants, clothing stores, galleries and exotic shops. South Street is great for a daytime stroll with the family, a solo shopping expedition or a night out with friends. Make sure you check out all of the awesome South Street events as well!

Of course, it wouldn’t be South Philly without our beloved sports stadiums, Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park and the Wells Fargo Center. In case you haven’t heard, Philly loves its sports teams! Nothing makes us happier than tailgating outside of the stadiums and rooting for the Phillies, Eagles and Flyers (and hating the Cowboys)! One of the biggest perks of living in South Philly is having the stadiums right in your backyard and getting to enjoy all the sports day Philadelphia enthusiasm right out your front door.

If you are looking for a high quality feast, we recommend South Philly as your first stop! Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks are the most famous cheesesteak joints around. Tony Luke’s is another famous Philly comfort food spot that comes highly recommended by locals. The area offers a wide range of classy, delectable and authentic Italian restaurants including L’angolo Ristorante, Italiano’s, Dante and Luigi’s, Francoluigi’s Pizzeria & High Note Café. The wonderful diversity of South Philly can be seen in its food and you can find a wide variety of authentic feeling cuisines from around the world. Check out Circles Contemporary Asian for some of the best Thai food in Philly. Miss Rachel’s Pantry and Vegan Commissary have you covered for great vegan fare. Khmer Kitchen churns out some very popular Cambodian food and Tortilleria San Roman serves to-die-for authentic Mexican dishes. No matter what your choice of cuisine may be, you can find it in South Philly!

South Philly definitely knows how to serve up a good cup of coffee. Ultimo Coffee is a Philly favorite with a classy, spacious atmosphere and delicious, high powered coffee. Black n’ Brew is an amazing café, you may find yourself coming for the coffee and staying for lunch. Their food is fan-tastic! Chapterhouse Café & Gallery is a fun, youthful coffee shop that hosts tons of literary events and poetry readings. Grindcore House is a hip and happening coffee shop with great specialty drinks and yummy vegan food. If you are a coffee enthusiast in South Philly, we recommend that you explore some of these fantastic cafes.

East Passyunk

The new(ish) food and shopping scene of East Passyunk Avenue is a welcome addition to South Philly! This area is great for shopping, strolling and dining. We love browsing all of the boutique shops, exploring the endless list of delicious restaurants and stopping for dessert at one of the many ice cream and dessert shops.  East Passyunk is the perfect destination for foodies, families and those of us in need of some retail therapy.

South Philadelphia is a great area with a lot to offer! Get out there and experience it!
