Northern Liberties, Philadelphia’s Shining Star

As one of the oldest cities in the United States, Philadelphia’s rich history is all around. Northern Liberties, is one of our historical neighborhoods that has seen many eras of growth, decline, and rebirth.

Way Back When…

It was originally established as an autonomous community by an Act of Assembly in 1771 and then became part of Philadelphia with the Consolidation law in 1854. Starting out as a highly industrial area, Northern Liberties was known for manufacturing. Thriving mills, breweries, leather tanneries, paints and chemical works, tool making factories, and iron and stove foundries were all established early on. Northern Liberties was known as an alternative to the densely populated city and it rivaled with Southwark as the first Philadelphia suburb. Eastern European artisan immigrants continued developing the area in great numbers throughout the 19th century.

In 1985, Northern Liberties was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood includes several buildings also on the Registry; the Daniel Boone School, Burk Brothers and Company, Integrity Title Insurance, Trust and Safe Deposit Company, Thomas Jefferson School, Mifflin School and St. John’s Church.

Now.

In recent years, the area has seen large improvement projects to revitalize and further develop the region residentially. Just north of Center City, Northern Liberties is one of the most highly desirable areas for development. Traditional townhomes are most prevalent, but new development has brought many apartment and condominium complexes. It is becoming a bustling enclave for artists, students, designers, and other young professionals.
