It is located between the Lower Northeast section of Philadelphia and North Philadelphia, bordering Fishtown, Olde Richmond, and Norris Square. Kensington has a rich industrial history and is traditionally known as the working class center of Philadelphia. Initially, it was employment-focused around the nearby waterfront and the activities of fishermen and ship and boat builders. In the early 19th century, Kensington was a prominent location for iron and steel manufacture. Later, it became home to a variety of potteries, factories, and machine works. In the late 19th-early 20th century, Kensington became home to a booming textile industry, particularly in carpet manufacture.
